Red Light Panel, Infrared Sauna or Heat Lamp: What Is the Difference?

An infrared sauna and a heat lamp are built to warm you. An LED red light panel is built to give off specific wavelengths of light, and the warmth it produces is a side effect. They are three different products, and the word infrared is where the confusion starts.

Red light panel

LEDs give off narrow bands, for MARS 400 about 660 nm and 850 nm. You use the panel at close range for a short, timed session: the MARS 400 cycle is 10 minutes. The panel can feel warm, but heating is not its purpose.

Infrared sauna

A cabin warmed by infrared heaters, usually far-infrared, which are tuned to heat rather than to give off specific near-infrared wavelengths. You sit inside a heated space and the aim is warmth and sweating. It needs space for a cabin and a suitable power supply.

Heat lamp

A lamp with a bulb that gives off a broad spread of infrared and visible light, aimed at warming a spot. It gets hot, it can be bright and it needs care around fabric, hair and children. The light is not controlled to a particular wavelength.

Side by side

  • Light: a panel gives narrow bands from LEDs, a sauna gives heat from infrared heaters, a heat lamp gives a broad spread from a bulb.
  • Purpose: a panel is a short light session, a sauna is whole-body warmth, a heat lamp warms one spot.
  • Session: one automatic 10-minute cycle on MARS 400, usually longer sitting sessions for a sauna or a lamp.
  • Space: a panel fits a desk or a shelf, a sauna needs a cabin, a lamp needs a stand and clearance.
  • Care: with a panel, protect your eyes and keep the vents clear; with a sauna, follow the cabin rules on time and drinking water; with a lamp, keep it away from skin and fabric.

Quick answer

Does a red light panel heat the room?

MARS 400 draws 82 W and part of that becomes heat, which is in the range of a household light bulb. It can feel warm up close, but it is not a heater.

Which one for what

If you want to warm up, a sauna or a heat lamp does that. If you want a short, timed session of red and near-infrared light in a small space, that is what a panel is for. They are not interchangeable, and none of them replaces medical advice. See MARS 400 if a compact panel is what you are after.
