Birthday Gift Ideas for Mum, Dad and Grandparents
Choosing a birthday present for mum, dad or a grandparent goes better when you start from their home and habits rather than from a shop window. Below you will find how many Hong Kong families mark the big birthdays, five questions worth asking about any practical gift, and what MARS 400, our tabletop red light panel, includes if you decide on it.
Milestone birthdays (大壽) in Hong Kong families
Many Hong Kong families celebrate the 60th, 70th and 80th birthdays as 大壽, often with a banquet where children and grandchildren fill a round table at a Chinese restaurant. Some families keep the older custom of celebrating a year before the round number. Check with a sibling or an aunt which year your family counts before you book anything.
A milestone present often comes from all the children together. When brothers and sisters split the cost, agree beforehand that one person places the order and that there is one delivery address, so the parcel does not end up at the wrong flat.
A busy banquet hall is not the place to unpack anything with a power cable. Plenty of families hand over a card or a red packet at dinner and leave the larger present at home. With delivery to your parents' address, nobody has to carry a box out of the restaurant at the end of the night.
Five questions to ask about any practical gift
- Where are the controls? Buttons and a readable display on the device mean nobody has to install an app, create an account or hunt for the Wi-Fi password before the first use.
- What exactly is in the box? The listed contents should cover everything needed on day one, from the stand to the power accessories and a printed manual.
- Where will it live? Many Hong Kong flats are small. Measure the table, shelf or corner first, and make sure a socket is within reach of the cable.
- Can it go straight to their door? Delivery to an address in Hong Kong saves carrying a heavy parcel on the MTR or a minibus.
- What happens if something is wrong? Look for a warranty with a stated length and start date, and an email address that replies both before and after the order.
The Resty pick: MARS 400
If you go for a Resty, our birthday pick is MARS 400, a compact red light panel used on one chosen area at a time, such as the face or neck. These are the facts worth checking for a present:
| What you check | MARS 400 |
|---|---|
| Controls | Power button, R/NIR button and countdown display on the side of the panel, plus a switch at the back. No app, touchscreen or remote. |
| Session length | A standard 10-minute cycle, then the light switches off automatically. |
| Light | 60 LEDs, 660 nm red and 850 nm near-infrared, on separately or together. |
| Where it stands | An attached folding stand for a steady, level table; listed panel weight 2.6 kg. |
| In the box | Panel with stand, original power accessories, protective glasses and user manual. |
| Warranty | 3 years from delivery, for manufacturing and material defects in normal home use. |
| Delivery | Free within Hong Kong; pre-order, ships in mid-November. |
You will find the full specifications and the current price on the MARS 400 page.
Timing your order around the birthday dinner
Because MARS 400 is a pre-order that ships in mid-November, place the order early, especially when the banquet date was fixed weeks ago. Mid-November is an estimate, not a promised date. You can put your parents' Hong Kong address in the delivery field at checkout and pay with FPS, AlipayHK or WeChat Pay.
On your first visit after it arrives, unpack it together, go through the manual side by side and pick the table where it will stay. The manual describes a starting distance of about 30 cm from the panel and three sessions a week at first.
For someone who likes warmth while seated
A light panel is not a heater. For a person who mostly enjoys warmth while sitting down, the Resty infrared heat lamps are the other option: the 275W model with one head and the 550W model with two, both on a floor stand with a built-in timer and a remote control. See the infrared heat lamps to compare the two.

Use and safety
- Put the supplied protective glasses on before the LEDs start and keep them on for the full cycle, also in the near-infrared-only mode; never look into the LEDs.
- Keep to one 10-minute cycle per session, indoors in a dry room and while awake; end it early in case of discomfort to the eyes or skin.
- A person who is unable to notice discomfort or to stop a session must not use the panel independently.
- Speak to a qualified healthcare professional first in case of pregnancy, light sensitivity, photosensitising medication or an eye condition.
